Illustration of the normal process of the assimilation of glucose by the system: after ingestion the glucose is diffused via the intestine (top and in blue) in blood circulation. A signal is sent to the pancreas which will secrete a hypoglycaemic hormone (insulin, blue). The insulin will allow the storage of glucose in the form of glycogen by the liver and the muscles (represented by smooth muscular cells , bellow on the left). It also allows the penetration of glucose and glycogen in other cells of the system in particular the adipocytes (represented in yellow, bellow on the right).
