Cystic fibrosis. Comparison between the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) sequence between a healthy individual and a patient with cystic fibrosis. DNA sequence is seen as coloured bands with letters down the centre of the image to indicate the base sequence (A,G,C or T). These base sequences indicate genes that code for proteins. In this case, the protein encoded is known as CFTR. Cystic fibrosis sufferers have a mutation in this gene. The dotted lines running across the image indicate the mutation site. CF sufferers have a missing CTT code which means that the CFTR protein does not function, causing cystic fibrosis.
