Progressive ossification of fibrous tissues, especially muscles, tendons and ligaments, leading to blockage of the joints. In this image: ossified muscles tissue implanted on the right posterior iliac crest (white). Also note the hypotrophy of the iliac wings. The two white areas near the lumbar vertebra represent ossified muscle tissue causing ankylosis in the posterior inter-apophyseal joints.
