Fossil of Archaeopteryx, a flying reptile with feathers. The bones (black) are surrounded by feathers (brown areas). The head is at upper centre, with the wings at upper right and lower centre. The legs are at centre left, and the tail is at upper left. Less than ten specimens of Archaeopteryx have been found, all from the Solenhofen limestones of the late Jurassic period (195-135 million years ago), in Bavaria, Germany.
